Shell CuInSe2 (CIS) Photovoltaic Minimodules The main advantage CuInSe2 (CIS) cells has over amorphous silicon cells (a-Si) is that a-Si loses around 10% of its power after a month or so of exposure to sunlight, whereas CIS actually gains about 10% after approximately 3 hours exposure to the sunlight of at least 1/3 standard full sun intensity with no load (light soak). The photons of sunlight modify the semiconductor structure, repairing boundary defects that are produced during the high temperature production processes. After this light soak, the efficiency gain is permanent. However, the light soak must be performed with no load. So before permanently connecting them to a load, you should leave them in the sun for a few hours to get the max efficiency.
